Sage Payroll 2011

We are delighted to announce the availability of Sage Payroll 2011. Once again, Sage has incorporated improvements, including quicker installation and greater ease of use. New features include straightforward management of new employees, efficient handling of leavers, and new payments and deductions.

Let me point out in particular, however, one of the most significant of the new features: you now need only push a button to process a salary sacrifice scheme. Past versions of Payroll were able to deal with salary schemes, but solely by means of a pension deduction rather than as the negative payment that HMRC recommends.
Such schemes are, of course, increasingly popular because of the double advantage involved, namely:
  • increased pension contributions benefiting the employee and
  • reduced NI contributions benefiting the employer.

Corrupt data and maintenance/backup

Another outstanding feature of Sage Payroll 2011 is its automatic back up facility, allowing rapid recovery from errors or data loss.

This prompts an urgent reminder that you should constantly ensure that Sage data is checked and backed up, particularly when running your accounts programme. Data corruption has various causes, including electricity cuts or spikes, PC problems, and interruptions as data is sent across a network. In any event, corrupt data cannot be relied on; it could mean an entry has been posted incorrectly, and can in some cases result in a Trial Balance that doesn’t balance! It’s simple both to check and to back up your data, as Sage in fact reminds you as you close your program. Having seen for myself the disruption and the cost in time and money involved in remedying corrupt data, I must urge you to follow the recommended routine!

Sage Training

Now is the time to start planning for 2011, and planning should naturally include a review of your training needs.

It may be some time now since you had any Sage training, and this suggests a refresher. Users of new versions of Sage in particular could usefully learn about the new features available to them, while any of you might be wondering whether your version can perform the tricks you’d like it to. In either case, just give us a call.
